The mission of the Edmonton Seniors Centre (ESC) is to provide opportunities and support to seniors to further their overall well-being and quality of life.
Welcome to ESC, your key to new opportunities, activities, and lifestyle changes of your choosing. Come take advantage of the programs and services we offer, aimed at improving quality of life and promoting the health and well-being of adults aged 55 years and up.
Programs at the Centre range from fitness, the arts, computer classes and learning different languages, to various forms of dance and social opportunities. Seasonal sessions also feature information seminars, day trips or local outings, and a spectrum of 'special events'.
Our Outreach service, as you'll read on that page, works with isolated or less-able seniors in the community to help meet their respective needs.
And then, of course, we have our Volunteer program, for those invaluable individuals who want to share their skills or learn new ones, and who are fundamental to our very existence!
So, be it as a visitor, a member, a volunteer, a regular participant or someone who signs up for a specific program or two … again, a warm welcome to our world here at ESC!
Respecting Connecting Evolving Empowering
History of the AgencyIn 1970 a group of Danish seniors began meeting weekly in the basement of St. Joseph's Cathedral. As membership increased, a drop-in centre was formed and, in 1976, 'West Edmonton Seniors' was incorporated as a non-profit organization.
The group moved to the Edmonton General Hospital in 1991. Originally on the main floor of the hospital, the Centre re-located to the 6th floor in 1993 and back again to the main floor in 1997, into what used to be the Day Hospital. In 2005, West Edmonton Seniors changed its name to Edmonton Seniors Centre to reflect the fact that, given the City's expansion, we were no longer in the west end! |
